Construction Chemicals

Most of the most expensive repairs in a building are water-related, and almost all of them are preventable. In construction chemicals, product selection follows a joint assessment of the substrate condition and the expected stress.

Waterproofing

Cement-based waterproofing mortars are used on foundations, retaining walls, water tanks and wet rooms; they form a breathable layer that bonds fully to the substrate. Liquid membranes eliminate the risk of seepage at joints on terraces, balconies and geometrically detailed surfaces. Bituminous sheets are preferred on large, flat areas.

Three things determine the choice: which direction the water comes from (positive or negative pressure), whether the surface will move, and what covering will go on top. A single product rarely suits all three conditions; products are separated detail by detail.

Concrete admixtures

Plasticisers deliver the same workability with less water, increasing strength. Retarders make placement controllable in hot weather; accelerators keep work moving in cold. Waterproofing admixtures make the concrete itself part of the sealing layer.

Repair and filling

Repair mortars are used for section repair after corroded reinforcement has been cleaned, applied together with an anti-corrosion primer. Joint fillers and sealants preserve flexibility where the structure moves — closing those points with a rigid material brings the crack straight back.

Adhesives

For ceramic, granite and large-format porcelain tiles, the adhesive class is chosen by tile size, absorbency, substrate and whether the application is indoors or out. On large-format tiles the wrong class shows up months later as hollowing and cracking.

Floor coating systems

Epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings are used in car parks, warehouses, production areas and laboratories. Whether the coating holds depends on surface preparation: skip moisture measurement, surface opening and priming, and the coating blisters within months.
