Public Address and Emergency Announcement

Public address systems serve two different purposes: music and announcements in daily use, and evacuation guidance in an emergency. Both can share the same speaker infrastructure, but the emergency function brings additional requirements.

Everyday public address

Installed for background music and announcements in stores, cafés, hotel lobbies and business centres. The area is divided into zones; each zone's volume can be set separately and different sources routed to different zones. That is how music plays in the shop floor while only announcements reach the stockroom.

Speaker choice depends on the space: flush ceiling speakers in suspended-ceiling areas, projector-type speakers in high-ceilinged production halls, weather-resistant models outdoors. A 100 V line system is preferred at facility scale because it reduces signal loss over long runs.

Emergency announcement and evacuation

Emergency announcement systems work integrated with the fire panel. When the alarm triggers, a pre-recorded evacuation message plays automatically in the relevant zones; a phased floor-by-floor evacuation scenario can be defined where needed. A microphone station allows live announcements, and emergency announcements override all other sources.

Line supervision matters in these systems: a cable break or speaker fault is monitored at the panel, so no zone stays silent when it is needed. A backup power supply keeps the system running for a defined period during a power cut.

School and campus applications

In schools, the bell schedule, daily announcements and emergency messages are combined in one system. The bell programme is defined on a calendar; separate scenarios can be stored for exam days and special programmes.

Design

Speaker count and placement are calculated from floor area, ceiling height and ambient noise. The aim is an intelligible level at every point; a system that shouts over noise in some places and cannot be heard in others is of no use.
